Sustainability and Social Value Zone

The Welsh Government has set an ambitious decarbonisation objective to cut emissions by at least 45% by 2030. To achieve this, a target has also been set for the Welsh public sector to become carbon neutral by 2030.

With this in mind, the Welsh Government has set a target of 70% of waste should be recycled by 2025, increasing to 80% by 2030. It is envisaged that, with maximum commitment from the public sector, public procurement can commit to a significant shift away from those materials with the highest carbon footprint and ensure that re-usable, re-used, re-manufactured and recycled content goods are considered first.

While the measures contained within the Social Partnership and Public Procurement Act support the delivery of socially responsible procurement – which means purchasing goods, works and services in a way that improves economic, social, environmental, and cultural wellbeing. It uses the public purse to drive beneficial outcomes for wider society.

The Sustainability and Social Value at Procurex Wales will host several sessions dedicated to exploring why understanding Wales’ public sector procurement sustainability and social value requirements is crucial to securing business in the Welsh public sector marketplace.
